  • Topic 2

    Year 11 Food and Nutrition - kai hauora

    Year 11 Food and Nutrition is a Level 1 NCEA course.

    In this course, students will learn about healthy eating for teenagers and how to keep food safe and free of food poisoning. They will investigate foods from other countries, analyse societal influences on food choice and well being, and learn  how to read and make sense of all that information on food labels and packets.

    Students will cook healthy meals and gain valuable practical life skills to set themselves up well in their first flat.

    11FDN is a full Achievement Standard course offering internal and external credits.

    This course leads to 12FDN and 13FDN (which is UE approved) and to a possible career in dietetics, sports nutrition, food technology or in the hospitality industry.

    Year 12 Food and Nutrition - kai hauora

    Year 12 Food and Nutrition is a Level 2 NCEA course.

              

    This is a full Achievement Standard course offering both internal and external credits. This course leads into 13FDN (which is UE approved) and into a possible career in dietetics, sports nutrition, nutrition related fields, food and nutrition teaching, food technology etc.

    Students will learn about sports nutrition; how families in NZ are struggling to feed themselves enough nutritious food and reasons for this; they will investigate a range of sustainable food-related practices and evaluate these, and take a critical look at the influence the media has on food and healthy eating in NZ. 

    Each week students will cook foods relevant to these topics and learn to challenge and question current thinking on nutrition.

    Year 13 Food and Nutrition - kai hauora

     

     

    Year 13 Food and Nutrition is a Level 3 NCEA course

    13FDN is UE approved and offers a full Achievement Standard Course made up of internal and external credits.

    Students will learn about some of the big issues surrounding food today eg: food miles, over-consumption of energy-dense foods, the influence of media and advertising on our food choices, and the influence of multinational food corporations on our food choices etc. They will learn to think critically about the foods we have available, the foods they choose to eat, and be able to justify their own food choices and the food choices of others.

    Authentic practical lessons are an important component of this course, although the assessment emphasis is on the academic aspects.
