Hospitality Studies at Burnside High School focuses on the preparation of high quality food items in a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Students are taught a wide variety of cookery methods and preparation techniques. The food items prepared are aimed at representing industry standards and utilise a range of recipes from all around the world.

Students are also taught the art of Espresso Coffee utilising the school’s commercial coffee equipment. Food and Beverage service training is also provided to develop a sound knowledge of front of house and table service skills.

Programmes are available from Year 11-13. A full National Certificate in Hospitality (Introductory Cookery) can be achieved by students by completing all three Year 12 Hospitality course options (12HCS, 12HFB and 12 HFS) over a two year period.

Students can choose to begin their National Certificate study in Year 11 by taking the 11/12HFS course. The Level 2 credits contained within this course can be used towards both NCEA Level 1 and Level 2

A specialised Level 3 Year 13 commercial cookery course is also available. This course best suits students wishing to seriously explore cookery/hospitality as a potential career option
