The Year 9 Music Programme

9MUO

General Music Studies: 5 periods every 2 weeks for 1/2 a year.

 

This course is an appropriate choice for students who enjoy music, but have limited or no performance experience, and would like to develop in this area.

 

This course covers a general introduction to instrument learning, music literacy, and music appreciation. The students are encouraged to explore and appreciate a range of different styles of Music.

The types of units offered include the following options:

 Practical Units - Guitar, Keyboard, Recorder, Tuned and Untuned Percussion and Music Technology (Garageband, Sibelius)

 Written units - Orchestral Instruments, Jazz Music, Rock History and World  Music

 Theory skills - including 5 Burnside High School Theory Levels.

Students also have access to Itinerant Music Tuition, with a large range of instruments on offer.

Students taking this course are able to continue to 10MUO.

Students progressing to 10MUO will need to access an instrumental or vocal lesson, either at school or in the wider music community.


9PMU

  • Performance Music Programme:  5 periods every 2 weeks for a full year

     

    This course is an appropriate choice for students who want to further their musical experience, who are committed musicians, and who are interested in studying Music at Year 10 and beyond.

    Entry to the course is by application with the student’s enrolment. Students are expected to be having lessons on their primary instrument either privately or through the schools itinerant system.

    Student selected for the Performance Music Programme will be placed in a form class with other students of similar musical ability.

    The school reserves the right to place students where they will function best with respect to their learning.

    This course covers a general introduction to Music History, Ensemble Performance, Solo Performance, Music Literacy, Music Technology and Composition.

    The types of units offered include:

    Ensemble Performance (1 Period per week)- Junior String Orchestra, Junior Concert Band, Junior Jazz Band, Junior Performance Choir and Junior Guitar Ensemble.

    Solo Performance

    Written units - Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Twentieth Century, Jazz and Rock

    Theory skills - teaching to a minimum of Grade 3 to 4, by the end of the year.

    Compositions skills - this includes the use of Music Technology (Garageband, Sibelius)

    Students also have access to Itinerant Music Tuition, with a large range of instruments on offer.

    It is assumed that students applying for this course will be continuing to 10MUO.

    Cost: $10 for course booklets.

    SMP - Specialist Music Programme:  In addition to the above students participate in a one hour workshop in the student’s specialist area each week.

    Entry to the course is by audition in June of the student’s Year 8 year.  It is a course requirement that students must have private lessons on their primary instrument.

    The students are placed in the West Division Performance Music class (9WRA) and follow the same in class programme as the rest of this class.

    Cost: as above plus Specialist Music Fee (See application form)
