Year 9 Food Technology - Hangarau kai
In Year 9 students may choose to study Food Technology - this is one of the Technology option choices. Yr9 FDT is a one semester course (approximately 2 terms). There are 5 classes over the two-week timetable, and on average, students have practical lessons once a week. Students are required to bring some of their own ingredients for these lessons.
In the first unit of Food Technology, students cover some very fundamental topics and concepts such as preparing food safely, food preparation skills and basic nutrition, as well as establishing a sound understanding of the Technology Cycle and the concepts and terminology associated with this. This ensures all students have a sound skills and knowledge base prior to the next focus units.
In the next units students work on specific technology tasks, working through the technological process. This involves the students being creative and trialling their own original ideas for solutions to an 'issue'. Outcomes will include a variety of recipes using a specific kitchen 'gadget'.
