Year 10 Horticulture offers students an introduction to the basic skills and knowledge of all aspects of this important area of industry for New Zealand.
Students are given the responsibility of maintaining a garden plot in the horticultural area of the school. They learn basic skills of propagation (growing plants from seeds, cuttings etc) in the glasshouse and look after them throughout the year.
In class, students learn (at an introductory level) about topics within the subject such as, soils, propagation methods, landscape design, the horticultural industry and plant science and management.
At this year level, the emphasis is on the practical work. The horticultural industry offers many different career opportunities. Year 10 Hort is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in growing plants to find out whether this could be a future for them!
Further study at school:
At BHS, students have the option to continue at years 11, 12 and 13 with NCEA horticulture. (years 12 and 13 Hort are subject to student numbers)
Year 11 Horticulture
Students have the opportunity to gain knowledge of basic horticultural principles and to develop a range of practical skills especially in the area of plant propagation during the growing months of the year. Two of the achievement standards offer a scientific grounding in horticultural principles and plant science.
Students are assessed on their written knowledge and understanding of the principles taught through three internally assessed achievement standards and two external achievement standards.
On completion of this course, students will find their knowledge and skills useful when seeking employment in the Agriculture or Horticulture industry (orchards, nurseries, market gardens, farms, landscaping and parks and reserves or in further studies at level two and three and/or at tertiary level.
