Level 2 Year 12 Biology
Level 2 Biology takes a major step into the living world about us.
This course looks in depth at the amazing complexities that exist within ecosystems along with the interactions between animals within their habitats and communities. We will explore the diversity and speciation of the many organisms that have evolved and adapted to inhabit the many different environments of this planet.
On the other side of the Biology spectrum, the course delves into the unique world of the cell and some of the remarkable processes that take place within. We will study the mechanisms of enzymes and the control all the various activities of life processes. We analyse the intricacy of DNA and genetic variation along with the processes involved in expressing the information stored in this remarkable molecule.
Biology is a fascinating science subject to study, making sense of the living world within us and all about us.Not only is this course a great continuation to further an interest in Science, but is also a pre requisite for many science based careers such as Medicine, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Environmental Science, Conservation, Sports Science, Nutrition and Consumer Science or Law.
Level 3 Year 13 Biology
The Year 13 Biology course does not just cater for the immediate needs of those wishing to continue from L2 Biology, but attempts to lay a sound foundation for those students wishing to advance on to tertiary studies in the Biological Sciences. At the same time the course provides a continuation with the interest in Biology and a satisfactory extension to the subject for those people who do not wish to continue any further with the subject. The course extends the ecology component through investigating the behaviour and physiological responses of animals and plants to their environment. Social and migratory behaviours in animals are explored and the cellular physiology behind plant responses are studied. We will further our understanding in animal physiology and adaptation by looking at homeostasis and body regulation in response to different environments.Evolution and the speciation of organisms, including our own species Homo sapiens, is unravelled in both the biological and cultural trends. To complete the full picture of Biology, DNA and genetics will be studied, pushing an understanding into gene expression, biotechnology and genetic modification. At the conclusion of the course, a student should have the skills to recall and use relevant knowledge and concepts in Biology, solve problems in biology through the use of scientific methods and laboratory techniques, and be able to communicate clearly their ideas and understanding.
