This Friday, 29 March 2019, our school will be closed for the day to allow our staff and students to attend the National Remembrance Service in Hagley Park at 10.00 am. This is an act of respect for those we have lost.

The Friday 15 March Attack had a significant impact on our community. Muhammad Haziq Mohd Tarmizi, a current student, was killed; three fathers of students were wounded; and three further students had four close relatives killed. Our staff have provided wonderful support for our students and families since the attack. The National Remembrance Service will provide an opportunity for staff and students to acknowledge and reflect on the event, the collective response, and our hopes for the future.

The decision of the Board of Trustees to close the school on Friday has not been taken lightly. We appreciate that it may be disruptive for some families, however, we expect large numbers of our staff and students will want to attend the service.

Families will be free to choose whether students attend the National Remembrance Service in Hagley Park, or reflect on the events of Friday 15 March in some other way.

Students who attend the service do not need to wear school uniform. The school will not be providing transportation as the Metro Bus Service will provide excellent opportunities for students travelling to and from the venue. Students will not be supervised by our staff at the event since this is not manageable at such a large gathering. Therefore, individual families will need to discuss the arrangements for their child/children on this day.

As a result of the decision to close the school, our Teacher Only Day scheduled for Term 4 is likely to be cancelled.

Our thanks to the Burnside High School community for your understanding and support with this decision.
