Showquest was held on the 20th and 21st of May with Burnside taking two teams to compete against other schools in a showcase of dance, drama, music and art. Our junior team who competed on the 21st of May were lucky enough to win 1st place and a number of other awards including lighting, costume, drama, props, video wall and especially the Tikanga award, this award is given to the school who has the best team spirit and attitude towards the staff and other teams throughout the day so it was definitely a highlight to win. We took a team of about 100 kids to the town hall and had a rehearsal bright and early at 8 am followed by performing that evening. Our theme was about the loss of arts and we basically wanted to ask the audience, “What are we, who are we without The Arts?” and “What will you do to save the arts?” The arts are a crucial part of our sense of self and are especially important to everyone competing so we wanted to highlight this through our performance. Although it was a long day we all enjoyed every bit of it, another highlight during the day was being able to share our chants with the other schools to show off our Burnside pride. It was amazing to be able to meet a bunch of new people and experience dancing in the beautiful newly reopened town hall and see all of our hard work pay off!
