On the 14th June, Burnside high school students competed in the annual Canterbury, Year 11 Inter-School, Maatangi Whenua Geography Competition.
This year Papanui High School hosted the event and it was run in conjunction with the New Zealand board of Geography teachers, University of Canterbury Geography department and the Teachers’ College.
Students were challenged in a number of rounds, ranging from recognising Geography in the news, resource interpretation, play-dough modelling and applying geographical concepts.
Congratulations to Will Sloane, Ryan Hall, Sandra Pang, Rory Evans Fee, Wan Zhi Tay and Courteney Bremner for displaying excellent teamwork skills during the competition. They were placed 7th and 11th out of the 23 teams entered.
This year the Canterbury regional event was won by Timaru’s Craighead Dioscean School. They will now go on to compete in the National competition in Wellington.
