Burnside High School intends to move to a situation whereby students are strongly encouraged to bring their own devices (computers or similar) to school to help them with their learning. This has been trialled with junior classes and Year 13 students over recent years.
We believe it will take several years before the whole school is fully BYOD capable.
Currently, our intention is to strongly encourage ALL 2014 Year 9 students to bring their own device from the start of Term Three. All staff, and particularly those who teach Year 9, will undergo training in the delivery of BYOD-rich lessons during Terms One and Two. This will be through a programme of Professional Development for all staff on Monday mornings (consequently our current thinking is that school will start for students a little later on that day).
Parents of 2014 Year 9 students are encouraged to plan ahead for this development. While more advice will be posted to Year 9 parents early in the year, our current thinking is to have Year 9 students bring a wireless capable device from the start of Term Three. A suitable device (such as a Chromebook) is likely to cost in the order of $400 - $500.
More information will be made available early in 2014.
