Congratulations to Clize Craven 13TKB and Miku Kiyama 12NWU who won the prestigious New Zealand Secondary Schools Culinary Competition held at the Manukau Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon. They will now represent New Zealand in Tahiti at the International Secondary Schools Culinary Competition being held 4-11 October. In preparation for the Tahiti event, the girls will hone their skills under the mentorship of Mark Wylie, a renowned New Zealand Master Chef.

Final Cook off

Along with their Gold Medals and trophy they each won a $2000 City and Guilds Culinary Scholarship and a trip to Tahiti. The school won a $1000 Bidvest Voucher and a $7000 Blue seal Turbofan oven and stand.

The National competition was extremely competitive with each of the 10 competing teams having already won their respective regional competitions including last year’s winners from Nelson College. The culinary standard was very high with 4 of the 10 teams gaining a gold medal (90-100%). Clize and Miku consistently scored highly through all of the kitchen methods, entrée and main course sections resulting in the highest overall score.

Their winning dishes included an entree dish of golden beetroot fritter with baby chioggia and red saute, goats cheese and beetroot chips accompanied by a rich beetroot sauce The main dish comprised of sous vide chicken breast filled with semi-dried tomato and preserved lemon on a crumbed parmesan potato cake with petite sausage, char-roasted seasonal vegetables served with jus and tomato butter sauce.
